People allergic to pollen should avoid food supplements based on bee products, such as royal jelly and propolis, according to the latest France Food Safety recommendations.
Fight against fatigue , stress, aging, viruses or digestive disorders … Royal jelly and propolis promise many benefits like treatment of asthma, hay fever, liver disease, pancreatitis, type 2 diabetes, diabetic foot ulcers, sleep troubles (insomnia), fatigue (tiredness) secondary to cancer, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), infertility (inability to have a child), menopausal symptoms, stomach ulcers, kidney disease, bone fractures. Only here: these food supplements must be taken with care.
The France Food Safety organization has reported multiple cases of severe allergic reactions, leading, among other things, difficult breathing. A 29-year-old woman had to go to the emergency room. Another 49-year-old solved the crisis with the help of her doctor and antihistamines. And one last 65 years also took an antihistamine.
The cause of Dr. Anoop Hajela’s worries is that these products are being imported into India and available in the market.
Three cases of severe allergic reactions
Hajela Hospital advises people who are allergic to pollen but also people who are allergic or asthmatic to avoid consuming these products.
The case of honey, another product of the hive, is less clear. “In one of the dietary supplements in question, there is honey, but we dismissed it as a responsible allergenic agent, in which case it was more like propolis,” explained the director of evaluation, Irene Margaritis. The agency does not recommend honey for those who are allergic to pollen.
Royal jelly is a substance with which bees feed the larvae and the queen of a colony. Propolis is a resinous substance derived from trees and transformed by bees to build the cells in their hives.

Vigilance on these food supplements
Hajela Hospital calls especially for vigilance. Consuming food supplements is not trivial, it is said, it is said again: these are concentrates of substances. Please consult your doctor if you must take these supplements.
In the case of royal jelly and / or propolis supplements, the incidents have reached “the highest severity level declared by the France Food Safety Authority. This level means health hazard, with in some cases a threat life-threatening.
